The Chronofixe Asterix Is a Punch in the Face For Romans (Numerals, that is)
An affordable classic diver themed around the famous moustache-weilding Gallic comic icon, in collaboration with Seconde/Seconde/.
Chronofixe is a French brand created in the mid-19th century in Les Rasses, a small French village near the Swiss Border, just a few kilometres from La Chaux-de-Fonds. Despite the name falling into proverbial oblivion, it was relatively big at some point, with up to 200 workers. Among other watches, it is known for producing Type XX watches, the famous pilot’s chronographs designed after the French Ministry of Defence requirements in the 1950s. The name is now being resurrected by entrepreneur and watch aficionado Jon Cruys. Chronofixe relaunches with an Asterix-themed diver designed with Romaric André, aka Seconde/Seconde/…, but new watches are expected soon – with mostly tool watches (including Type XX).
The Chronofixe Sous-Marine Asterix is an affordable classic diver reinterpreted through the lens of Seconde/Seconde/, who animates it with the famous Gallic comic character Asterix, created by André Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. In his characteristic style, Romaric André injects a fun twist into the model, with Asterix doing what he’s best at: punching Romans – in this case, the number VIII. Always in reference to Asterix, the watch features Roman numerals on the bezel and the date wheel. The crown is engraved with Caesar’s laurel crown, while the screw-down caseback is emblazoned with Asterix and the motto “Résister encore et toujours / Resist, always and forever…”.
The Chronofixe Sous-Marine comes in a compact 37mm 316L steel case. The polished chamfer on the lugs creates interesting reflections, elevating its appeal. The 60-click unidirectional rotating bezel is fitted with an aluminium insert and operates sharply. The water-resistance is 200m, so you’re good to take it out for a bit more than a splash of rain.
The Asterix is powered by the automatic Seiko NH35. This affordable workhorse ticks at 21,600vph and delivers 41 hours of power reserve. It displays the hours, minutes, hacking seconds, and the date. The accuracy is rated at -20/+40 seconds per day, but it is usually well within those parameters in practice.
The Chronofixe Sous-Marine Asterix is presented on a black leather strap fitted with quick-release spring bars. Released in a limited edition of 500 pieces, it retails for EUR 395 and is available to pre-order now.
