The Depancel [Re]Naissance Launching on Kickstarter

Depancel pays tribute to a splendid 1930s French car, the Delage D8-120, with an affordable and original watch.

Founded just a few years ago, Depancel is driven by the passion for old French cars such as Delage, Panhard and Facel Vega. Now launching on Kickstarter, the brand’s latest creation, the Depancel [Re]Naissance is a tribute to an iconic car, the timelessly elegant Delage D8-120. Powered by a straight 8-cylinder engine with 120bhp (a lot for this era), this superb piece of automotive design was created in the 1930s. At the time, the search for perfect aerodynamics was a field in which aesthetics were paramount… Long before the invention of CAD, automotive design was more about sensual twists than about the pragmatism of modern aerodynamic engineering.

The Depancel [Re]Naissance draws its inspiration from the Delage D8-120 front grille. With its 37x42mm dimensions, its distinctive square case is extended by short lugs. It is presented in 316L steel, black PVD-coated steel or bronze PVD-coated steel. Another connection to France and the automotive inspiration of the watch, Depancel has decorated its dial with a tricolour racing stripe in blue, white and red. Dressed with this patriotic splash of colour, this stripe pattern dial comes either in black or in white. The sapphire crystal comes with a double-sided anti-reflective coating.

Two versions of the watch are available. Both are powered by Miyota automatic movements. The Miyota calibre 9120 shows the hours, minutes, seconds and a calendar with day, date and month indications – all placed in sub-dials. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a 40-hour power reserve. The calibre 8215 displays the hours, minutes, seconds and the date. Running at 21,600 vibrations per hour, it has 42 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Visible via the exhibition caseback, the rotor is decorated and painted in France.

The Depancel [Re]Naissance is worn on leather, racing or tweed strap. One of the stitches matches the tricolour stripe of the dial. The watch is secured with a pin buckle. A folding buckle is also available as an option.

The Depancel [Re]Naissance is Made in France. It has been launched on Kickstarter to keep costs down and cut intermediaries. Super Early-Bird prices start as low as EUR 449 for the [Re]Naissance 24H. The [Re]Naissance 3H is available from EUR 299. After the Kickstarter launch, the models will be offered at EUR 649 and EUR 399 respectively.
