The Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition
The yearly edition of Chopard's watch dedicated to motorsports enthusiasts.
Nothing can rival Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s passion for watchmaking except for his passion for classic cars. As the Co-President of Chopard, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s genuine passion for historical watches culminated in the rebirth of Berthoud, while his passion for classic cars has resulted in the brand’s 35-consecutive-year role as sponsor and official timekeeper of the 1000 Miglia car race. Since 1988, Chopard has sponsored this glamorous event for car lovers and is once again on the starting line for the 40th edition of the 1000 Miglia, scheduled to take place from 15 – 18 June 2022. And as a recurring gift for watch and car lovers, the brand is releasing the yearly edition of its dedicated chronograph watch, with the new Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition – available either in steel or in a combination of steel and gold.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 15th of June, marks the start of the 40th edition of the historic 1000 Miglia rally, an event based on the race created in 1927 with 77 participants. Among the most famous historic motoring events in the world, the race was originally run over a 1,618km course that started and finished in Brescia, Italy, with Rome marking the turning point. After ceasing to exist in its original race format in 1957, the 1000 Miglia was revived in 1977 as a time and reliability trial for cars built between 1927 and 1957. It still covers 1,000 miles following much of the original route through the heart of Italy from Brescia to Rome and back. Since 1988, Chopard and its Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele are partnering with the event as sponsor and timekeeper, but also as a participant.
This year marks the return of the clockwise route as 404 cars will be heading off from Brescia in one-minute intervals, departing in order of age (oldest first). For the 34th time, Scheufele will be behind the wheel of the family’s 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL, well-known at the 1000 Miglia thanks to its strawberry-red paintwork. This is the car that he drove together with Jacky Ickx in 1989. This year, Ickx sets off beside his daughter Caroline-Marie, who will be undertaking her second 1000 Miglia after making her debut as co-driver in 2019.
This year’s version of the dedicated watch, the Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition – to be precise, a pair of limited edition watches – is a new iteration of the powerful chronograph model we’ve seen in 2021 and 2019. We’re looking at a typical watch from the Mille Miglia GTS collection, with an oversized and motorsport-inspired 44mm diameter. The case is available in all-steel or a combination of steel and ethical 18k rose gold on the crown, pushers and bezel. The design leans heavily on the world of cars with oversized pump pushers, a large screw-lock crown and, of course, a tachymeter scale on the bezel.
Contrary to the previous editions that mostly played on tones of grey, this new Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition feels fresher and slightly more colourful. The two models are equipped with a dark blue ceramic insert on the bezel with a white printed scale. Similarly, the typical racing perforated leather strap with a tyre-like rubber lining combines light brown with blue colours. In both editions, the strap is attached to the wrist by a stainless steel triple folding clasp.
The second evolution on this Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition concerns the dial, which is executed in silver for a brighter look. The base is finished with a circular satin-brushed pattern, which radiates from the centre of the dial, not from the centre of the small seconds, like the 2021 edition. The sub-counters, with a Valjoux-like 6-9-12 display, are tone-on-tone and snailed, and all elements of the dial – applied markers and hands – are executed in blue CVD and filled with Super-LumiNova. Red accents are found on the central seconds, sub-counters and the 1000 Miglia logo. The date sits under a magnifier positioned on the inner side of the crystal.
Under the solid steel back engraved with the race logo is a tried-and-tested automatic, cam-lever integrated chronograph whose architecture is based on the Valjoux 7750. Beating at 4Hz and delivering a 48-hour power reserve, this reliable movement is set apart by its COSC chronometer certification.
