The Scintillating Presence of the New Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding 37mm

AP presents two 37mm gold models glowing with diamonds, blue sapphires and pastel Grande Tapisserie dials.

When Audemars Piguet‘s iconic Royal Oak turned fifty in 2022, the brand announced that the permanent range of Royal Oak models would be updated aesthetically and mechanically. With this in mind, the 37mm Royal Oak was one of the beneficiaries of the ‘new design evolution’ and reappears in 2024 in two luxurious editions in gold cases with a generous sprinkling of diamonds and gemstones.

While the design evolution of 2022 respects the DNA of the Royal Oak’s tonneau-shaped case, octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet and tapisserie dial, the incorporation of the automatic calibre 5900 resulted in a reduced thickness from 9.8 to 9mm. Not only is the case slimmer, but the bevels on the bezel, bracelet and sides are more pronounced, meaning that their polished angles attract more light to the case and make it look slimmer. Another key design upgrade concerns the bracelet with thinner and lighter links that taper elegantly to the folding clasp.

Other nuanced changes effected in the 2022 makeover involve the minutes track on the dial, which is now printed directly on the Grande Tapisserie surface and not on the flange, and the size of the white gold hour markers and Royal Oak hands that are now uniform across the Royal Oak collection. Both models feature gold hour markers matching the case colour and a double hour marker at noon set with 8 brilliant-cut diamonds. The gold applied Audemars Piguet signature is obtained through galvanic growth and placed beneath the double diamond hour markers. The background of the date window at 3 o’clock matches the colour of the dial.

Available in 18k pink gold or white gold, the new 37mm models highlight the dynamic architecture of the case with a flurry of brilliant-cut diamonds. The pink gold RO Selfwinding model is paved with 164 brilliant-cut diamonds on the case, bracelet studs and AP folding clasp. Given the case’s geometry, the diamonds must be cut in different sizes to adapt to their contours. The eight-sided bezel glows with 40 brilliant-cut gradient blue sapphires, designed to mirror the colour of the light blue Grand Tapisserie dial. Matching the light blue colour of the stones and dial, the watch comes with a pearly pastel blue alligator strap.

The case of the white gold version, including the bezel, is set with 204 brilliant-cut diamonds. Echoing the subtle light green colour of the Grand Tapiesserie dial, the watch comes on a pearly light green alligator strap.

In 2022, AP fitted the Royal Oak Selfwinding 37mm with a new engine, replacing the former calibre 3120. The Calibre 5900, an automatic movement made by Vaucher, is marginally thinner than the 3120, with a height of 3.9mm compared to 4.26mm. It has a higher frequency of 4Hz and a power reserve of 60 hours.
