John Arnold’s marine chronometers were vital tools for calculating longitude at sea, trusted by explorers like Captain James Cook and used by the East India Company’s fleets. This pioneering spirit lives on in the modern Arnold & Son’s Globetrotter line, showcasing the brand’s distinctive approach to functional, finely crafted world timers. Earlier references are available in steel, red gold and as a high-end platinum Limited Edition. The journey continues with the new Globetrotter 42 Steel, which refines the concept and carries forward the same spirit of global discovery that once guided explorers with Arnold’s historic chronometers.

The new Globetrotter 42 Steel refines the concept in a more wearable format. Compared to the original 45?mm × 17.23?mm case, this new version is more compact at 42mm in diameter and 15mm thick. It features a narrow bezel, a near-flat fluted crown, a domed sapphire crystal with a double-sided anti-reflective coating, a transparent sapphire case back, and 30 meters of water resistance.

Two dial options are offered: Strand Blue with rhodium accents or Greenwich Green with gold details. Under the signature arched steel bridge, hand-finished and secured with blue or gold-finish screws, sits the Globetrotter’s defining feature: a three-dimensional dome depicting the northern hemisphere as seen from the North Pole. This rotating dome completes a full turn every 24 hours to display world time. The continents are sunray-brushed and finished in rhodium or gold, contrasting against oceans lacquered in Strand Blue or Greenwich Green.

Around the dome’s perimeter, a newly integrated city ring shows twelve global reference cities, aligning with the bead-blasted 24-hour fixed ring for quick world time reading. The local time is read using two arrow-shaped pointers extending from beneath the globe, both treated with Super-LumiNova for low-light visibility. The hour hand is pointing to transferred Arabic numerals on the 24-hour ring and Roman numerals on the outermost 12-hour ring.

The watch is powered by the in-house calibre A&S6122 automatic movement, which provides 55 hours of autonomy at 28,800 vibrations/hour. Its finishing is in line with the brand’s high standards: a palladium-treated main plate with circular graining, bridges decorated with ‘Rayons de la Gloire’, blued and polished screws, and a skeletonised, engraved tungsten rotor visible through the display back.

Each version comes on a matching alligator leather strap, ink blue for the Strand Blue model, Cornwall green for the Greenwich Green, closed with a steel pin buckle engraved with the Arnold & Son logo. Production is limited to 88 pieces per edition, with a price of CHF 18,300 (including VAT). More information at www.arnoldandson.com.

  1. I like some things these folks make, but this is impractical and mechanically underwhelming. The price does not need commenting on – just in case: it’s not a bargain; whichever way one looks at it, it’s the opposite.
