The New Online-Exclusive Panerai Luminor GMT Ceramica 40mm PAM01783
A practical traveller’s companion, the Luminor GMT is back in a sleek 40mm black ceramic case paired with a blue dial.
Panerai is a byword for large, luminescent, water-resistant tool watches built for the Italian Navy with a powerful design that has stood the test of time for more than 80 years. With a collection based on just two models – Radiomir and Luminor – Panerai has applied the adage that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That does not mean Panerai does not introduce upgrades, complications, and stylistic tweaks to its two product lines. Addressing one of the issues levelled at the brand’s oversized watches, Panerai recently released a compact 40mm Luminor in a ceramic case with a GMT complication and a professional 300m water-resistance rating. Following in its wake, Panerai releases a second Luminor GMT reference in black ceramic with a blue dial in a limited edition of 80 pieces, available exclusively online.
While 40mm might not strike most of us as compact, Panerai’s universe is populated with large watches. The most extreme example is the whopping 50mm Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT Mike Horn. The Luminor, which usually oscillates between 44mm and 47mm, has been successfully scaled down to 40mm without losing an iota of its personality or diving credentials. Although ceramic has been used by the brand since 2007, the recent PAM01460 Luminor GMT was the first 40mm model in a ceramic case. And there’s now another version, but only available online and in limited numbers.
The 40mm black sandblasted ceramic case of the new PAM01783 imparts a military stealth vibe and is smooth and cool to the touch. What’s interesting is that the signature crown-protecting device is also crafted from ceramic, with a mix of satin and polished finishes. Designed to ensure the case’s water-resistance to the expected 300m, the bridge over the crown protects it from accidental knocks. The lugs have been reinforced to meet the internal shock-resistance standards.
Panerai’s iconic sandwich dial with cutouts for the hours reveals the layer of white Super-LumiNova X2 painted on the lower plate, which also peeks through the four small apertures on the running seconds counter at 9 o’clock. Now offered with an attractive blue sunbrushed dial, the contrast of the blue and white is crisp. And even though some say that blue and black don’t match, it works beautifully here. As a traveller’s watch that displays two time zones at a glance, home time or reference time is displayed by a central 12-hour GMT hand with a white luminous arrow tip. All the hands are black with SLN, and the date aperture, with its matching blue disc, is a useful function when travelling across time zones. Unlike larger BiTempo (dual time) models, there is no minutes track on the periphery, making for a cleaner dial.
A smoked sapphire crystal on the caseback reveals the automatic P.900/GMT movement with a robust 3-day power reserve generated by the bidirectional rotor and stored in a single barrel. The base movement is sourced from ValFleurier and shared with other Richemont Group brands like Baume & Mercier, IWC and Cartier. The calibre has a stop-seconds function for precision time-setting.
Fitted with the brand’s tool-free interchangeable strap system, the watch comes with a black calfskin strap and an additional blue rubber strap. As mentioned, the Luminor GMT Ceramica PAM01783 is a limited edition of 80 pieces and available to purchase exclusively online at panerai.com for EUR 15,800 or USD 16,300.
