For its ninth year partnering with Alpiner Extreme Automatic Freeride World Tour Special Edition (FWT), Alpina introduces a fresh take on the Alpiner Extreme Automatic, a model positioned at the intersection of traditional Swiss watchmaking and high-altitude sport. While the brand has long aligned itself with alpine culture, this Special Edition, housed in the compact version of the brand’s sports watch, makes the connection explicit, incorporating FWT iconography more prominently than ever before.

Housed in the compact 39mm × 40.5mm variant of the Alpiner Extreme case, the watch adopts a monochromatic grey palette inspired by alpine rock. The cushion-shaped case keeps the familiar mix of polished edges and satin-finished surfaces – vertical brushing on the bezel and circular brushing on the case – giving the piece both visual structure and a level of durability suited to outdoor use. At this size, the watch wears unobtrusively and is intended to slip easily under layers of technical clothing, an intentional decision for a model aimed at mountain sports.

The dial carries the most distinctive change: the stylised FWT emblem, a triangular peak bisected by a curved line suggesting a rider’s descent, is used as a recurring pattern. While simple in execution, its placement marks the first time Alpina has integrated the FWT logo directly into an Alpiner Extreme dial. A date window at 3 o’clock adds everyday practicality, and legibility remains the priority with Applied markers and a high-contrast layout.

Inside beats the AL-525 automatic calibre, a reliable movement with a 38-hour power reserve based on the Sellita SW200 platform, itself a clone of the ETA 2824. It is hidden behind a steel caseback engraved with the Freeride World Tour motif. Water-resistance is rated at 200 metres, extending the watch’s intended versatility from snow to summer conditions.

The accompanying black rubber strap reinforces the watch’s sporting purpose, designed to resist cold, impact, and abrasion. A deployant clasp secures the package, while a rubber-clad crown improves grip, even with gloves.

This Alpiner Extreme Automatic FWT Special Edition is not limited. While not a radical redesign, it’s a cohesive and purpose-driven iteration that reinforces the Alpiner Extreme’s role as Alpina’s modern adventure platform. It is priced at EUR 1,695, the same as the standard editions of this watch. For more details, please visit alpinawatches.com.
