The New TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche Limited Edition (Video, Live Pics & Price)

A racing-inspired Carrera Chronograph in a new and bold colour scheme.

During Watches and Wonders 2022, TAG Heuer has unveiled its second chronograph stemming from its partnership with Porsche. This partnership between the two brands was announced in 2021 and resulted from an entwined history marked by an obsession with speed and motorsports. Following the first classic stainless steel version, the TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche is back in a black-and-yellow limited edition for 2022.

First and foremost, the brands have in common the Carrera name that was incarnated by Jack Heuer’s 1963 chronograph and some of the carmaker’s most powerful creations. In particular, both Jack Heuer and Ferry Porsche were fascinated by La Carrera Panamericana, a perilous endurance race staged in Mexico that ended up inspiring the name of Jack Heuer’s chronograph and the top-performing sports cars produced by Porsche.

So it was no surprise that to kick off this partnership, TAG Heuer presented a first Carrera chronograph special edition modelled on the Carrera Chronograph introduced in July 2020. But this time, it comes in a far more expressive, more aggressive design language, brimming with racing codes and a striking colourway based on black with vivid yellow accents inspired by the Porsche Pantone, reserved for the brand’s sportiest vehicles.

The angular Carrera case is presented in black DLC steel with a ceramic bezel that features a tachymeter scale, and just like the first edition, the Porsche name is inked between 1 and 2 o’clock. At 44mm, it is on the large side, but it wears rather comfortably on the wrist thanks to relatively short faceted lugs. The piston-like pushers operate precisely and are paired with a crown featuring a narrow yellow ring. The water-resistance is rated at 100m.

The black shimmery dial features a tri-compax 3-6-9 lay-out: the sub-dials at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock with their asphalt-like texture and yellow touches correspond to 30-minutes and to the 12-hour elapsed times, and, at 6 o’clock you’ll find the small seconds and the date indication. It uses double-digit luminescent applied numerals to emulate racing dashboards. The hands of the chronograph are detailed with a contrasting tip. Overall, it feels technical, and there is quite a lot going on.

Flip the watch over and the sapphire crystal caseback reveals the in-house Heuer 02 calibre, a modern integrated chronograph with a column wheel and a vertical clutch to ensure smooth and accurate operations. Running at 4Hz, it has a healthy 80-hour power reserve. The column wheel is yellow, and like the first Porsche special edition, the black-coated rotor is designed to look like a steering wheel with TAG Heuer and Porsche inscriptions contrasting in yellow. Consisting of 168 parts, the movement is manufactured in-house in Chevenez.

The TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche Chronograph is available on a textured black calfskin strap with a racing yellow colour lining and a pattern that recalls the interior of a Porsche sports car. It is secured to the wrist by a DLC-steel folding clasp that is released via double safety push-buttons.
