What could well be on the wrist of Iron Man / Robert Downey JR? A URWERK UR-110 of course (and he wears it in Spider-Man Homecoming)

Spotted - Robert Downey JR - URWERK UR-110 - Spider-Man Homecoming

In the world of watches, it’s become de rigeur to have watches “placed” in movies (and sometimes, it’s a bit more than just that). It’s a practice known as “product placement” and, in certain measures, it seems to help selling watches (do you feel the irony here…?) However, the story here is much cooler than the usual “watch in a movie” commercial tie-up, and has been dictated by passion, involving with one of the coolest watches around. So, what could well be the watch worn by Iron Man / Tony Stark a.k.a Robert Downey Jr in upcoming movie Spider-Man Homecoming? And why this choice?

Recently, in a post on his own Instagram account, Robert Downey JR showed himself wearing no less than a URWERK UR-110 Torpedo in Rose Gold, while attending the world-premiere of Spider-Man Homecoming. Even cooler, he posted another image with Yacine Sar, the independent watchmaker’s Head of Communication. So, what to think of that…? The story has been told to us by Yacine herself:

That’s a cool story and it happened just in time for our 20th anniversary. Sony Pictures contacted us in late 2016. They told us a major character of their Spider-Man Homecoming production wanted to see and maybe wear one of our watches. Could this be the latest scam?… We do not have any Ambassador and were/are not keen to pay for one so we declined politely. But they contacted us again, insisting it was a personal request and drop the name… So I flew all the way to Atlanta to meet this new fan: Mr Robert Downey JR himself. He thought his character: Tony Stark / Iron Man would be even cooler with an URWERK on his wrist. Would anybody have said no? We did not !!!

We all know that Downey JR is a watch collector – and in fact quite a special type of watch collector, as you can see in this interview he did for GQ. However, moving from mainstream brands (such as JLC, Rolex or Omega) to a super-mature brand like URWERK is particularly satisfying to us. The best part of this story? Well, in fact, not only has the guy been seen wearing his URWERK UR-110 on red carpet events, but the watch will actually be visible in Spider-Man Homecoming movie – even if for the moment, we can only guess the watch in the official trailer, at 1:32.

Do we agree on this choice? Oh, hell yes we do! Think about it for a second? What could be the best watch for Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man in his civilian life? What could this wealthy American business magnate, playboy, and ingenious engineer have on his wrist? An elegant dress watch? Certainly not! A URWERK Torpedo? Yes, it does makes sense. Honestly, this is a great match and we are pleased to see that not only the watch appears on red carpets but has been deliberately chosen to be part of the movie, by the actor himself.

More details on www.urwerk.com. Spider-Man Homecoming was released in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2017 and in additional international markets on July 6. It was released in the United States on July 7, 2017. A sequel is scheduled to be released on July 5, 2019. So, will we see a new URWERK watch in this upcoming episode?…Let’s see what Robert has in mind.

  1. Un manque de classe ahurissant. du pur bling bling deguise en haute horlogerie.
les gouts et le couleurs ne se discutent pas il est vrai mais parfois faut briser des tabous. c’est purement et simplement une horreur. que did-je un miasme!

  2. Ahhh, you mean moving to a super expensive watch don’t you ?

  3. Hi Brice
thanks for sharing…It would be interesting to know whether Downey bought the watch, or simply used it during the movie and related PR.

Buying such piece would be an unquestionable sign of passion for watchmaking….Otherwise it’s only marketing.

    Just my two cents,
