New York – New York, the city that never sleeps has a Gotham-esque feel to it. Whether it’s a giant Japanese lizard, thousands of aliens, vengeful terrorists; a multitude of foes seem to be out to destroy perhaps the most important city of America. Amidst all of the terror, real or cinematographic, Lady Liberty remains a beacon of hope. RJ-Romain Jerome once again pays homage to the Statue of Liberty, standing tall in the Hudson Bay, with the Liberty-DNA Black.

In 2012, celebrating the statue’s 125 years anniversary, RJ-Romain Jerome decided to pay homage to it by introducing us to the RJ-Romain Jerome Liberty-DNA. The Swiss manufacturer once again collaborated with the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation Inc. and Gold Leaf Corporation to launch the second limited series in the Liberty-DNA range. The Liberty-DNA Black was launched this 4th of July, marking the 127th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty.

The original Liberty-DNA featured a copper dial with material salvaged from the actual statue, and a bronze bezel covering the sapphire crystal. The bezel mimics the Statue’s crown, and each spike is used as an hour marker. The choice of materials for the Liberty-DNA Black is no different, except everything is darkened. The 46mm case is PVD-coated steel, the bezel is PVD-coated bronze and the dial is oxidized copper with a grey lacquer to befit the theme of the watch. The RJ-Romain Jerome logo at 12 o’clock blends into dial and watch. The faceted hands have been polished, sandblasted and blackened to finish it off. The watch is fitted to a black hornback-alligator strap.

The trademark RJ-Romain Jerome style case houses the same movement as before, the RJ001-A, which is an automatic movement, displaying only central hours and minutes. On the caseback you can see an engraving of the Statue of Liberty’s flame enlightening the stars and stripes of the American flag.

Your own New York story might not be so Gotham-esque at all and if you feel the urge to commemorate America’s greatest conurbation than this might just be the watch you need. You can choose to be out in the open about it by wearing the Liberty-DNA, or remain under the radar with the stealthy Liberty-DNA Black. It’s your call.

Available in a series of 125 pieces, just like its sibling, the RJ-Romain Jerome Liberty-DNA Black comes in at a price of $ 14,900.- or €/CHF 13,500.- More information is available on RJ-Romain Jerome’s website.
